Figure skating is a dynamic sport to watch. Ask any parent or spectator at the Shawville Arena who stays to watch the skaters practise. It combines strength and grace, determination and perseverance. The level of exercise is moderate for beginners, so it is easily accessible to most children. Our programs have skaters as young as two years old. As our skaters improve, they have different levels of commitment to choose from, ranging from a one hour group lesson to private coaching fees and ice time three times a week.

The Shawville Figure Skating Club is truly a special cohort of individuals. Everyone involved is a valuable part of the community that is our club. We take pride in the welcoming and friendly environment our club runs itself on. Our skaters, parents, coaches, volunteers, and the wider community work hard to allow our club and the individuals within it to thrive in an atmosphere of enjoyment. The Shawville Figure Skating Club is a family joined by a love for the sport.

The reasons for joining our club are as varied as the skaters themselves. The CanSkate Program is an excellent introduction to skating; it can serve to improve performance in other sports such as hockey, dance, ringette, and any other sports requiring balance and coordination. Most of our Pre-Star and Star Skaters stay on in our programs to develop their potential as figure skaters or refine their skating skills, and sometimes they assist to coach the youngest skaters.

This sport helps to develop a sense of confidence along with physical strength and stamina, and let's face it, it's decidedly Canadian!

Skate Canada Programs offered by the Shawville Figure Skating Club

CanSkate

CanSkate teaches skaters of all ages the basics of skating in general. This program has been designed by Skate Canada to focus on fun, participation, and basic skill development. CanSkate provides lessons in a group environment, which are led by certified Skate Canada coaches who are assisted by trained Program Assistants. CanSkate programs are characterized by music, teaching aids, and a wide variety of games and activities. This program is divided into six levels. Skaters progress through these levels at their own rate and once the skills of a stage are mastered, three ribbons then a badge is awarded.

The Learn-to-Skate portion of the CanSkate program is suitable for children who have never been on skates. Through this program, skaters develop balance and confidence while completing the first stage. A great way to prepare a child to begin the Learn-to-Skate program is to have them wear their skates inside the house before getting on the ice and while completing the program in order to develop balance on their blades.

Pre-Star

The Pre-Star program has been designed to ease the skaters movement from CanSkate to StarSkate. This program is for skaters who have completed their Stage 3 badge and would like to continue on in an ice sport while completing the CanSkate badges. In this program, the skills being learned are more focused toward the specific sport of the upcoming athlete than they were in CanSkate. This program is offered in a group format led by a certified Skate Canada coach. The skaters are introduced to practicing with more independence and the use of the entire ice. The entire sessions are done with the instruction of a coach in order to accelerate progress of the skaters. The Pre-Star program offers skaters the opportunity to take part in CanSkate competitions.

StarSkate

Skate Canada's StarSkate program provides skaters with the opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating skills in four skill areas in group and private lesson format. StarSkate skaters may compete in invitational and interclub competitions. Skaters in this program receive lessons from a certified Skate Canada coach and work individually during practice sessions. Each skater must choose a primary coach and arrange lessons with them directly. Although the ice fees are still paid to the skating club, the lesson fees are paid directly to the skater’s coach (to arrange lessons, please contact a coach).

Skaters in this program may take Skate Canada Tests through the nationally standardized testing system. The four disciplines of StarSkate are skating skills, ice dance, free skate, and interpretive skating. Skating skills combines fundamental figure skating movements (focusing on edges, turns, power and speed) which are executed on a specified pattern. Ice dance teaches skating movements along with timing, musicality, and unison as skaters are partnered by a coach. Free skate consists of the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements, and stroking either in isolation or in sequence performed to music. Interpretive skating encourages a skater’s creativity, expression, and musicality, rather than focusing on technique. Each discipline is organized into six levels, which are passed through a test session with a certified Skate Canada judge/evaluator.
